Contract

dxw works with the public and third sectors to create great user focussed services and products.

We’ve been around since 2008 and worked on lots of projects that have made a real difference – from designing and operating transactional customer services to helping with strategy and capability building.

We’re looking for talented people who share our values to join us. We think it’s important to have diverse teams, and aim to create an environment where everyone is supported to do their best and feels free to be themselves.

We’re looking for permanent designers to join our team at dxw, building software and services for the public sector, based on user needs. We also encourage people looking for flexible working arrangements to apply.

The role

As a designer at dxw, you’ll be using skills covering visual, interaction and product design, and working alongside our user researchers, developers and clients, to make digital public services better for everybody.

You’ll be working in an agile and collaborative manner, and will inspire our clients with our ‘one team’ approach — at times co-located at their offices to design and build products and services even more closely.

As well as the skills associated with interaction design such as sketching, co-design and prototyping, you’ll use your understanding of front-end development. You’ll choose the right tools to solve a given problem at any phase of a project; we currently use HTML/CSS/JS, Figma/Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, Google G Suite, Sharpies, Post-its, whiteboards and words, but if you use other tools you think will improve our processes, we’re all ears.

Our user interfaces sit on top of backend code written in Ruby and PHP. You don’t need to be able to build a web application from scratch, but you do need to be comfortable building interfaces using web frontend technologies, and using Git and GitHub to make your designs part of the code base.

In addition to client work, designers are responsible for maintaining the dxw brand, and ensuring our sales and marketing teams have the best promotional materials at their disposal.

You:

  • are proficient with some of the technologies we use and are happy to learn about the others
  • enjoy presenting work and describing process to colleagues and clients, and involving the wider project team in design activities
  • know the importance of understanding users’ needs, and put them first
  • use evidence and experience to make decisions
  • are aware of accessibility issues, and how to address them
  • know which tool or process to choose when problem solving or prototyping, knowing that the correct level of fidelity is important
  • give and receive design critique and code reviews
  • are able to challenge ideas in a constructive and supportive manner
