The successful candidate will have worked as a developer for several years. They may have worked for companies that use agile methodologies, or may have an interest in agile principles that makes them keen to move to one that does. They’ll be a passionate technology advocate, able to understand and explain how technology can be used to solve problems. They will be keen to help to improve our development approach over time, so that we’re always doing things the best way we can.

Software development

The Ruby Developer will:

  1. Work on the development, testing and documentation of services for public sector clients
  2. Support clients and users with related technical problems and responding to user feedback
  3. Collaborate with user researchers to develop services based on real user needs and empirical evidence
  4. Support the operations team in performing routine tasks and maintenance by improving our CI and hosting platforms
  5. Participate in a collaborative approach to writing software where every feature is peer-reviewed
  6. Assist the rest of the team by contributing to a culture of constant improvement of team processes and practices

Advising clients and participating in the (agile) planning process

At dxw, developers are closely involved in the planning process. We sit with clients as a team, writing and prioritising development tasks (stories) together and discussing their implementation.

The Ruby Developer will:

  1. Help clients not familiar with agile development to become acquainted with agile principles, aiding the successful delivery of projects and contributing to a wider culture change towards agile practice in government
  2. Participate actively in the development communities, sharing skills and knowledge and learning from others
  3. Learn from our successes and failures over time, contributing to process improvements when necessary; helping the whole team to innovate, learn and improve

Skills and experience

The Ruby developer must have the following skills:

  1. Ruby, HTML, CSS and Javascript development and debugging
  2. Proficient in Ruby and its common good practices, with 2-3 years’ experience of Ruby on Rails
  3. Good understanding of modern accessibility, the implementation of responsive designs
  4. Test-driven development
  5. Good working knowledge of the terminal and a familiarity with the tools widely used by the Ruby community
  6. Awareness of best practice usability and the importance of user experience
  7. Excellent written and spoken English; good communicator
  8. Experience at every stage of the product lifecycle, from inception to production
  9. Source control using Git or Mercurial
  10. Working experience of usability testing and user-needs-led or UX-led design, incorporating research findings into development work

Bonus skills

The following skills would be useful but not required:

  1. Experience with a variety of Ruby frameworks
  2. Maintaining or participating in an open source project
  3. Experience working on projects using continuous integration and deployment
  4. Javascript development
  5. Experience with concurrent languages

Salary & terms

Competitive, depending on experience. Appointment is made subject to a successful background check.
